Communication

The importance of good communication cannot be overstated.

Be honest and thorough with the agency. It is important for the agency to have a clear idea of your needs to match you with the right home care aide. If there is something embarrassing or sensitive, if you’re calling for a friend or family member who is difficult to get along with, or if there are concerns about language barriers or other qualities, please discuss these concerns with SASI.

Be clear about your expectations. If you have no flexibility with days or times, if you need an aide who can and will help you clean out your closets, or if you have very specific cleaning techniques you use in your home, discuss this with SASI and during the interview with the aide.

Once you’ve chosen an aide, communication has just begun! Help the aide do well by learning your routines, preferences, and habits; make sure your home care aide knows who to contact in case of an emergency; and communicate with SASI on how well the aide is working out. You do not need to keep an aide who isn’t meeting your needs!
